Sizes and dimension

Randall’s Adventure Training ESEE 4

  • The overall length: 9 Inches
  • The blade length: 4.5 Inches
  • The blade width: 25 Inches

  • The overall length: 9.25 Inches
  • The blade length: 4.375 Inches
  • The blade width: 25 Inches
  • The knife weight: 0.4 Pounds
  • Material: 1095

From the first look, you may already see that the BK16 has a more noticeable profile compare to the ESEE 4. However, BK16 is actually the lighter one of the two even if its blade and overall length are longer. For the material, BK16 utilize 1095 which is a high carbon steel. It strengthens the blade and enhances its toughness but more or less vulnerable to stain and rust. On the other hand, ESEE 4 employs 1095 and 440C in its models. 440C is a high chromium steel which is good combating general corrosion and alike. Its toughness is adequate though not as good as the 1095

Handles constructions

When it comes to ergonomic, ESEE knife design is pretty famous and ESEE 4 is not an exception. The handle of ESEE 4 looks just like its ESEE 3 predecessor with a minor difference in the thickness. It has been well tested and is effective as a stable holding for your hand. Thanks to the presence of linen Micarta scales, you could have a tight grip on the handle even if it’s sweaty or wet. Its spine jimping offer increased control when you need to make thump supported cuts. The large choil can be used as extra finger groove if needed.

The handle of the BK16 appear to be a bit thin and small to some people but it works perfectly fine. Unless you have hand happen to be kind of large, you can hold the handle comfortably. The Ultramid material doesn’t feel nice overall but it should be good enough for the job. Micarta scales can also be found here which perform the same as the above. It did add weight to the handle though and as a result, the knife balance point shifts backward a bit. While the scales permit a tight grip, they could end up as potential hot spots in heavy uses condition.

For the blade, ESEE 4 employs a flat ground, drop point style which is easy to control and manipulate. You can achieve desired result results with only a moderate amount of force required. Skinning and batoning are easy to perform with this blade due to its thick flat spine and the drop pint. It’s not good piercing tasks but everything got to have pros and cons at the same time. There are two types of steels ESEE 4 use in its models. The powder coated 1095 is tough but tend to rust and stain if you don’t take care of it properly. The 440C model won’t have this issue and much easier to slice but the toughness is lower than 1095.

When you want a versatile knife, you will definitely like the BK16 blade. No matter what kind of tasks you intend to use the knife in, its blade can handle everything admirably. The length of the straight edge is sufficient for carving purpose while the belly works great for hunting needs. You can cut through rope and tough material like it with little trouble. But if you want to make thin slices, it could be a bit tricky because of the blade thickness and its coating. General performance of the knife remains fairly decent though.

Come with the ESEE 4 is its molded sheath that can keep the knifes safe and secure. For attachment, there is a clip plate you can mount on either side of the sheath.  In hot and humid environments, the plastic holds together rather well so you can carry the knife around conveniently. If you like to tie the sheath to belt or pack instead of clipping it, there are eyelets you can use. Cord and cord lock are provided with the knife as well so take advantage of them.

BK16 doesn’t have a fancy sheath but it’s quite versatile nerveless. To attach it, there is a Velcro – Snap belt loop along with MOLLE loops on its back. The sheath can be taken off without requiring the removal of your belt which is a major plus. To contain the knife, the top is secured by a dual snap mechanism that keeps the knife safely inside the sheath. On the outside is a small compartment for pocket-size tools such as a sharpener.

And that would be pretty much everything you should know about these knifes, not hard to understand, right? To determine the winner in a competition between ESEE 4 vs. BK16, you need to take into account your own preferences and personal requirements. If you know what you want then the only thing left to do is compare it to the knife characteristics and make your purchase accordingly.
